VITA offers freee tax help to qualified individualsWestchester/Putnum  — The Westchester-Putnam Workforce Development Board (WPWDB) will host an IRS endorsed “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” (VITA) Program Kickoff on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 pm at 120 Bloomingdale Road in White Plains.

The kickoff is an effort to launch an educational campaign to increase awareness to eligible Westchester and Putnam County residents about tax preparation assistance programs and possible qualifications to receive one or more federal tax credits designed to help low income taxpayers.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

VITA aims to help working families take advantage of all tax credits for which they are eligible, including earned income tax credit, child tax credits and education credits. This not only assists the individual family, but also increases tax dollars in the county. It is estimated that about 80% of refunds are then spent locally, which generates local sales, wages, and jobs, ultimately boosting the local economy.
